For the third time in two weeks, law enforcement officials in Johnston County are investigating the theft of packages stolen off the front porches of homes. Two have occurred near Clayton, one in Smithfield.
The latest incident was reported Wednesday at a home in the Weston Woods subdivision off Cleveland Road.
Packages containing $1,635 in children’s books and gifts were stolen including a Dr. Seuss book collection.
No arrests have been made.
Nationwide, an estimated 25.9 million packages were stolen in 2017. North Dakota tops the list for the most thefts. Statistics show most thefts occur during the daytime. One in three people say they have been the victim of a porch pirate theft. Surprisingly, more thefts occur in rural areas instead of major cities.
