An inmate died Monday after being taken to the hospital for medical treatment.
WTSB News has learned an inmate at Johnston Correctional Institution on US 70 was taken to Johnston Medical Center in Smithfield early-Monday for treatment after the prisoner became ill.
Around 3:00am, while being treated in the emergency room the inmate died. The inmate was reportedly accompanied by a correctional officer.
Smithfield Police responded to the emergency room to assist in the death investigation. The name of the inmate has not been released pending notification of their next of kin. The cause of death was not released.
