Probation Officer Shoots Dog During Attack

SMITHFIELD – A Johnston County probation officer sustained minor injuries after being attacked and bitten by a dog. The incident happened Sept. 10 around 4:35pm on S. Lakeside Drive.

According to Smithfield Police and NC Department of Adult Correction (NCDAC) officials, Officer R. Massengill was conducting a residence check of a person currently on probation in Johnston County.

While approaching the residence, Officer Massengill was rushed by three dogs, and was bitten in the leg by one of the animals. To end the attack, the probation officer shot the dog with his service weapon.

The officer was treated for his injuries.

According to Keith Acree, NCDAC Communications Director, there is a standard review when an officer fires a weapon.

We’re told the injured dog was taken to a vet for treatment.

  1. so many unanswered questions –was the officer inside a gated property? Were the dogs supposed to be contained if there was no fence? What is the procedure for checks on people that have their homes fenced? Is there a phone call? What?

  2. The town of Smithfield and police department know about those dogs. Hopefully, they’ll do something about it now before they kill someone.

  3. These dogs have been a problem for YEARS and get out and terrorize the neighborhood sometimes including me and my wife!
