Second-year radiography students at Johnston Community College recently won first place in the Tech Bowl competition at the North Carolina Society of Radiologic Technologists (NCSRT) conference in Clemmons.
JCC’s Tech Bowl participants were Matthew Green, Brittany Evans, Scott Alford, Ragan Threewitts, and Cassidy Guignard. The team received the Rita Kaye Harlow Memorial Bowl trophy, which will reside at JCC for one year. Students also received a monetary award for their participation.
“This is the first time JCC’s name will appear on this prestigious trophy, and we are so proud of our students and faculty,” said Ann Jackson, director of imaging programs at JCC. “They spent a lot of time preparing and they represented JCC very well.”
Various fundraising events and supplemental club funds from the Student Government Association provided the monetary means for the students to attend the conference. Faculty attendance at the conference was possible thanks to a Teaching Excellence for Academic Change (TEACH) professional development grant awarded to radiography faculty.
At the conference, students not only participated in the tech bowl, but scientific exhibits, the mock registry exam, and various seminars. Radiography faculty attended sessions for professional development, earned continuing education credits, and collaborated with radiography educators. Phil Blackman, JCC radiography instructor, was elected vice president of the NCSRT for the upcoming year.
