RedHawks Top Camels Sunday, 5-4

Buies Creek – Miami (Ohio) used a four-run sixth, including a three-run homer from Gary Russo, to salvage a 5-4 Sunday win at Campbell.

Miami pulled to 1-2 with the win, while Campbell dropped to 2-1. CU took the first two games of the series 7-0 and 5-3.

Michael Hendricks (1-0) earned the win for Miami, pitching 3 1/3 innings in relief with a run on a hit, three strikeouts and two walks. Ryan Marske picked up the save (1), pitching the ninth with a strikeout and a walk.

Miami starter Zach Spears surrendered three runs, all earned, on 10 hits in 4 1/3, striking out five and walking three. Andy Almquist also tossed 1/3 of an inning for the RedHawks, allowing a hit.

Campbell-Drew-ButlerCampbell’s Chase Johnson (0-1) took the loss, allowing four runs, three earned, on four hits with four strikeouts and two walks in 5 1/3 innings. Tyson Messer allowed a run on two hits with a strikeout in 2/3 of an inning. Erik Dowse retired all nine of his batters to close out the game.

Miami trailed 3-1 heading into the sixth before a single and an error to lead off the inning set up Ross Haffey’s RBI double. Russo followed with a three-run homer to left, putting the RedHawks up 5-3.

Ben Calvano’s RBI single in the eighth brought Campbell within a run, but double plays ended the Camels’ eighth and ninth inning at-bats.

Campbell stranded 10 men on base in the loss, leaving at least one on in each of the first eight innings. CU also saw base runners picked off in the third and fourth to damper rallies.

Miami put a run on the board in the second with Chad Sedio scoring on a double play ball, but Campbell answered with a pair in the third on Anthony Lopez and Cole Hallum RBI base hits. JD Andreessen’s homer in the fourth made it 3-1 Camels.

Russo went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run for the RedHawks, while Lopez paced the Camels at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run.

Campbell heads to Duke on Tuesday, Feb. 23, for its first road test. The Camels return home for the weekend, hosting Minnesota.
