Refreezing Roads, Bitter Wind Chills Prompt Weather Warnings

JOHNSTON COUNTY — Dangerous cold and icy road conditions are expected to persist across Johnston County and central North Carolina through Monday morning, prompting multiple weather advisories from the National Weather Service.
A Cold Weather Advisory is in effect from 7 p.m. Sunday until 9 a.m. Monday, with wind chills forecast to fall into the single digits and near zero. The National Weather Service warns that frostbite and hypothermia can occur if unprotected skin is exposed to the cold for extended periods.
At the same time, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m. Monday due to lingering snow accumulations and the risk of refreezing overnight. Any melting that occurs during the day is expected to freeze again tonight, creating patches of black ice.
Roads, especially bridges and overpasses, are likely to become slick and hazardous, officials said. The conditions could significantly affect the Monday morning commute across the area.
Residents are advised to use caution when traveling and to slow down while driving. Pedestrians are encouraged to watch their footing on stairs, sidewalks, and driveways, which may be icy and slippery.
The National Weather Service also recommends wearing appropriate cold-weather clothing, including hats and gloves, keeping pets indoors when possible, and checking on elderly family members, friends, and neighbors. Officials remind residents to use portable heaters properly and warn against using generators or grills indoors.
