Remains Found Near Neuse River Identified As Missing Smithfield Man
SMITHFIELD – Police have identified the skeletal remains discovered last week in a wooded area near the Neuse River as those of a Smithfield man reported missing in 2024.
The Smithfield Police Department said today (Tuesday) that the remains belong to Juvenal Beltran Villasenor, who was reported missing in July 2024. Information provided to investigators at the time indicated Villasenor was believed to be suicidal.
Officers first responded on Nov. 19 to a report of suspected human bones found off S. Brightleaf Boulevard, several hundred yards from the Neuse River bridge and close to an old boat ramp. Detectives secured the area and worked with the North Carolina Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to recover the remains and process the scene.
Police said there no evidence of foul play. The case remains active pending the final autopsy report.
Villasenor’s family has been notified.
