Retiree Falls For Unclaimed Money Scam

KENLY – A Johnston County retiree lost a large sum of money after falling victim to a scam. The 65 year-old Kenly area resident reported that she received a phone call from a person stating they were with the “National Unclaimed Fund Division.”

The caller claimed the victim was due a “large sum of money.” However, the caller stated that before the large sum of money could be released, the woman needed to pay $1,750 to a lawyer to cover legal costs. The victim mailed the money and within days was contacted again, this time stating they needed an additional $7,500 to cover more legal fees.

Unfortunately, the victim send another $7,500 through the mail. Later, she received a third phone call asking for even more money. The victim said she had no more money to send. Realizing it was a scam, she notified local authorities.

Altogether, the victim lost $9,250.

If you receive a text, email, or phone call claiming you have unclaimed money, be cautious. Most agencies never provide news of unclaimed funds this way. Potential owners are notified through the US Mail.

If you do receive a letter, verify it’s from an official government agency. Never give out personal information to anyone who calls, texts, or emails. And never send money. There is no cost to submit a claim for unclaimed funds.
