Search Warrant Leads To Hidden Compartment In A Wall

ANGIER – Two people were arrested on multiple narcotic charges after a robbery was reported outside their home.

On June 26, a 47 year-old Newton Grove woman reported that she was leaving the home of an acquaintance in the 400 block of Massengill Pond Road, Angier, in Johnston County. While driving down a path to reach the highway, the woman said a person she knew came out of the woods armed with a handgun. The suspect allegedly stole two cellphones, an iPod, and purse.

The victim said she returned to the home and was allegedly assaulted by Courtney Matthews, age 39, of the same address. During the assault, Matthews reportedly threw one of the stolen cellphones at the victim.

The victim contacted the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies arrived to investigate the robbery and while on the scene reportedly found suspected stolen property and narcotics.

Officers secured the home and executed a search warrant. Authorities allegedly found several stolen power tools, the victim’s stolen purse and two guns believed to have been used in the robbery.

Detectives also found a hidden compartment in a wall containing suspected narcotics.

Approximately 8.8 ounces of methamphetamine, 9.9 ounces of mushrooms, 1.5 grams of fentanyl, 60 different prescription pills, and just over $11,000 in cash was located and seized. A currency counter machine was also found in the residence.

On July 3, Matthews along with Kaven Lee Stephenson, age 36, of the 400 block of Massengill Pond Road, were arrested on multiple counts of trafficking narcotics, possession of a controlled substance, maintaining a vehicle or dwelling for a controlled substance, and conspiracy to traffic methamphetamine.

Matthews was also charged with common law robbery.
