Area residents are being warned about a scam occurring in eastern North Carolina.
A man has been calling people claiming to be a captain with their sheriff’s department. They claim the person has failed to respond to a federal subpoena and there are several warrants out for their arrest.
The law enforcement impersonator says they must pay a fine and court fee between $1,500 and $2,000 to take care of the subpoena. The person will direct potential victims to stay on the phone and retrieve money to send it to a designated location.
The latest incident happened in Duplin County where a person claimed to be a captain with the agency.
Duplin County Sheriff Blake Wallace says his department will never contact anyone and request that you send money to any location. Sheriff Wallace said local sheriff’s offices in any county would not contact anyone about a federal matter. If you should receive a call, simply hang up the telephone and do not give out any personal information.
Similar calls were reported in Harnett County in May. In Johnston County, 5 different reports of a similar jury duty summons warrant scam have been reported since June 2016.
If you have any questions or concerns, or you have been a victim of a scam, do not hesitate to contact your local law enforcement agency that services your area.
