Scarecrow Contest Transforms Benson Into Halloweentown, USA

BENSON – It’s probably safe to say that crows are avoiding Main Street in downtown Benson right now and, if you’ve visited recently, you know why — a couple dozen scarecrows line the sidewalks, attached to the light poles.

No, Benson doesn’t have a crow problem. The sudden appearance of the scarecrows is part of the Benson Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual Scarecrow Contest, now in its second year.

“We thought this would be a great way to get everyone in the Halloween spirit,” said Benson Chamber President Loretta Byrd. “We love seeing all of the unique creations people come up with — it’s really something to see!”

Mrs. Byrd is right — there are so many little details to spot in each scarecrow on Main Street. Cut solo cups for red spider eyes, jar lids for goggles, and some very creative uses of straw, old clothing, pumpkins, and even a coffin (that particular entry is from the local funeral home no less).

The scarecrows are quickly becoming a Benson fall tradition. When the Chamber announced this year’s contest, participants rushed to sign-up, many of them local and area businesses.

“It’s great to see the enthusiasm for this,” said Mrs. Byrd. “We love seeing all of the pictures on social media and people walking down Main just to see each of the scarecrows.”

1st – Mary Duncan Public Library with the “Minions” scarecrow.

2nd – Rose & Graham Funeral Home with the “Scared to Death” scarecrow.

3rd – Salvaged Heirlooms – with the “Headless Pumpkin” scarecrow. 

Honorable Mention – The Vine & Branch with the “No Equine on Main Street” scarecrow.
