SMITHFIELD – A school resource officer (SRO) at Smithfield Selma High School was reportedly assaulted by a student. That student is now facing criminal charges.
On Tuesday, May 6 around 10:30am, a Smithfield police officer, assigned to Smithfield Selma High as their SRO, assisted school administrators with escorting a student to the office.
The student, identified as 18 year-old Antonio Devon Gibbs of Selma, reportedly tried to leave the school office. When the SRO attempted to prevent Gibbs from leaving, the student struck the officer in the forehead with his elbow.
The officer was able to subdue Gibbs and taken him into custody with the assistance of other policeman who responded to the school. Gibbs was charged with felony assault causing physical injury on a law enforcement officer and misdemeanor disorderly conduct. He was booked into the Johnston County Detention Center and held under a $10,000 secured bond. He was later released on bail.
The officer sustained minor injuries.

Listen kids, don’t run from cops and most certainly don’t hit cops. They are just doing their job. On another note, THIS is why there is a teacher shortage. The amount of crap teachers put up with from students is appalling. That is what pay raises won’t fix and THAT is why I left the profession and will never return. I was yelled at, cussed out, doors slammed in my face, threatened, etc.
Yup, I am not a teacher and would never want to be one just for the reason you stated. You are so right on all counts. Antonio Gibbs, you are an adult now and assault on a LEO is a felony. You just ruined your life and at your age that is a shame and a waste of a good mind. As far as the SRO, I pray you will be OK.
EXACTLY! I retired early ( lots of sick leave added up). I can’t imagine what public schools will be like in 10 years. Just horrible. I was assaulted by students more than once.
He is 18. At what point do you stop blaming the parent and start looking at the your adult. You can raise a child to do right. But it is up to that child to live by those raising.
That open enrollment idea sounds better all the time.
They must have a different SRO from when I was there. That big deputy stood on business. I saw him break up fights and have them all wrapped up by himself. He barely talked but didn’t have too.
A child who has no respect of law enforcement is a direct threat to your child. He should be kicked out of public school.
This and all the “woke” mess are exactly why my grandkids will be homeschooled or in private school.
I am a teacher and I am very close to resigning. It’s not even the kids at this point. It’s the mindset of our board, of our admin and how things are being allowed or not addressed. Our board tries to ride the fence on way too much. We are NOT a democrat county. If you pretend to be a Republican, you need to go. Yes, it is a partisan board. Everything you vote on goes back to your political beliefs!!
The board needs to realize that Trump won Johnston County by a landslide. Keep employing these “woke” teachers and there won’t be much of a public school left. In all honesty, a few schools having to close their doors, might do the trick!
