Search Warrant: Argument Over Marijuana Led To Homicide

BENSON – A search warrant has revealed new details in the murder of a Benson man. Kenneth Wayne Dawson, age 50, was reportedly shot and killed by his own son, Kenneth Jake Dawson, age 20, inside the family home at 2493 NC Highway 242 North.

According to a copy of the search warrant obtained by The Johnston County Report, on March 29 around 6:45pm, Johnston County deputies and Benson Police responded to a 911 call from a woman who reported her husband had been shot. The caller stated her son committed the shooting. First responders found Kenneth Wayne Dawson deceased in the kitchen area with multiple gunshot wounds.

According to the warrant, “Deputies learned from Kenneth Jake Dawson through spontaneous utterances at the scene that an argument between him and his father, Kenneth Wayne Dawson, occurred over marijuana inside the residence. Deputies, during a protective sweep of the residence, found ladders with grow lights mounted to them consistent with an indoor marijuana grow operation.”

Several items were seized from the residence including a Waither P22 .22 caliber pistol, seven fired cartridge casings, one unfired bullet, a Columbia hat with an American flag and fish design, marijuana plants, and drug paraphernalia.

Kenneth Jake Dawson was charged with murder and manufacturing marijuana. He remains in the Johnston County Detention Center being held without bond.
