SMITHFIELD – Friday morning, Selma-area resident Caleb Johnson filed for the District 2 seat on the Johnston County Board of Commissioners.

Johnson, a Republican, will challenge incumbent Republican Commissioner Ted Godwin who filed earlier this week for re-election. Godwin has served since 2012.

“I truly think Johnston County is the best place to work, live, and play. It’s so much more than a bedroom community to Raleigh. The County is changing rapidly and we need to make sure what we do is to promote the well-being of people who live here and will move here,” Mr. Johnson said.

Johnson grew up in Salisbury, NC, and graduated from Liberty University where he was the student body president. He is currently employed in marketing for a construction company. He and his wife, Sara, moved to Johnston County just over two years ago. They have a 2 year-old daughter, River.

“This is where I want my daughter to live. We need to provide a sound education for our children, and have high-paying jobs in the county. While growing and providing those things, we need infrastructure in place to handle that, and solutions to public utilities, water and sewer problems, without overbearing regulations and taxes. I want people to spend their money in Johnston County and live in Johnston County, not in Raleigh and be subservient to Raleigh.”

If elected, Johnson said his goals are to solve infrastructure and water-sewer problems and improve recreational opportunities.

Johnson, described himself as a conservative pastor’s kid. He and his wife said they fell in love with Johnston County after moving here. He is a member of Clayton Crossing Church, treasurer of the Johnston County Republican Men’s Organization, avid outdoorsman, and FAA certified drone pilot.

The filing period remains open until 12 Noon, Friday Dec. 15, 2023.

  1. Doesn’t Mr. Johnson work for J.D. Beam Construction Company?

Owned by Tom Antoine, husband of Michelle Antoine?

    • Thanks for pointing that out. After some research it does appear that way. It appears to be a conflict of interest for sure. No vote from me.

  2. Hey, let’s look at a real problem here in Selma and Smithfield fast food resturants. Why are they all getting a 100% or a so-called grade A rating? Yes Jen R we progressive liberals welcomes you to our side too!!!

  3. I am not voting for anybody associated with Tom or Michelle Antoine. Tom knew he couldn’t win when Bennett decided to run so he had this lackey run in his place in another district.
