Southbound lanes of Interstate 95 in Johnston County backed up for several miles Wednesday after a tractor trailer overturned just south of Smithfield.
The accident happened around 9am, forcing drivers to detour off I-95 at Brogden Road (Exit 93) and then onto US301 South.
The driver, Martin Wygonik, 55, of Waynesburg, PA lost control of his 2015 Frieghtliner truck and trailer, which struck a guard rail at the Neuse River Bridge before overturning down an embankment.
Wygonik was not injured. However his wife, Crystal Wygonki, 57, a passenger sustained minor injuries.
Mr. Wygonik was charged with failure to maintain lane control. Damage to the NC DOT guardrail was estimated at $60,000.
The truck was reportedly transporting packages for FedEx to a terminal in Florida.
The Smithfield Police Department, Johnston County Sheriff’s Office, NC Highway Patrol, and NC Department of Transportation assisted with traffic control.
The interstate reopened just around 2pm.
