Two people were rushed to Wake Medical Center following an accident Sunday night on Brightleaf Boulevard near the Johnston County Department of Social Services Building in Smithfield.
Around 10:30pm, a car failed to make a curve on Brightleaf Boulevard at Hancock Street. The car ran off the roadway, narrowly missing a sign, church building and telephone pole but struck a large tree head on.
The car overturned after impact. The driver was pinned in the wreckage and the passenger was partially ejected.
A Johnston County sheriff’s deputy was the first on the scene. Smithfield Fire, Smithfield Police and Johnston County EMS responded.
The driver was extricated from the mangled car and both victims were immediately transported to Wake Medical Center.
Smithfield Police said Monday the accident still remains under investigation. The names of those involved was not immediately released. Police did say alcohol may have played a contributing factor. Charges are pending. Photos by John Payne
