BENSON – A Dunn man is accused of shooting out of the window of a car just after he passed by a trooper conducting a routine traffic stop on Bailey’s Crossroads Road in Harnett County Saturday night. The trooper gave chase, bringing the shooter into custody minutes later.

Crenshaw

Trooper T.C. High had stopped a car on the road near Curr-Well Drive, near the Harnett-Johnston County line, when the man’s vehicle passed by. High said he noticed a muzzle flash and the sound of a gunshot coming from the car so he released the stopped driver and pursued the shooter.

The pursued vehicle came to a stop at the intersection of Benson-Hardee Road and Old Fairground Road in Johnston County where Trooper High took 19-year-old Jalon Levern Crenshaw, of 504 E. Pope St., into custody.

Harnett County Sheriff’s Office investigated the incident and charged Crenshaw with discharging a firearm within an enclosure to incite fear. His bond was set at $15,000 secured. Harnett County Sheriff’s Deputy D. Dowdy is the charging officer.

Troop B District 8 First Sgt. D. Hawkins confirmed the information regarding the incident. Rumors had circulated on Saturday that the suspect shot at Trooper High. Hawkins said this was not the case.

No one was injured during this incident.
