In a unanimous vote, the Smithfield Town Council had approved a 20-lot residential development at the end of Will Drive off Yelverton Grove Road. The council approved a request by JYMCO Development Inc. to development 8.62 acres in the Twin Oaks Subdivision.
Developers said 19 of the new lots will be stick built homes. One small lot may require a doublewide mobile home.
The Smithfield Planning Department will not require the developers to install sidewalks. Prior to approval, Councilman David Barbour said he was concerned about the town “picking and choosing” who is required to install sidewalks. In July, the council voted 5-1 to require Johnston Community College to install a sidewalk for a new engineering building. Mr. Barbour voted against the sidewalk requirement at JCC.
