Smithfield Awards $1.38 Million Street Resurfacing Contract

SMITHFIELD — About six miles of town-owned streets will be resurfaced after the Smithfield Town Council awarded a $1.38 million paving contract to Coastline Contracting Company LLC, the lowest bidder.

The project includes work on the following streets:

• North Fourth Street, blocks 399–100 to Market Street (0.21 miles)
• North Fifth Street, blocks 499–199 to Market Street (0.36 miles)
• East Johnston Street, blocks 100–399 to South Fourth Street (0.21 miles)
• East Riverside Drive, blocks 100–399 from South Second Street (0.28 miles)
• South Fifth Street, blocks 500–799 to U.S. 301 (0.47 miles)
• South Fifth Street, blocks 800–1999 to Brogden Road (patch work only)
• Wellons Street, blocks 100–Second Street (traffic loop replacement) (0.01 miles)
• Sanders Street, blocks 200–499 to South Vermont Street (0.28 miles)
• South First Street, blocks 1200–900 to Sanders Street (0.42 miles)
• South Vermont Street, blocks 1200–900 to Sanders Street (0.42 miles)
• Underwood Street, full length (0.48 miles)
• Carolina Street, full length (0.48 miles)
• Blount Street to Midway Street or to U.S. 301 (0.30–0.60 miles)

Public Works Director Lawrence Davis told council members on Nov. 18 that the resurfacing is expected to be completed by June 2026.

The town initially opened bids in October but delayed approval until November to check references for Coastline Contracting, which had not previously worked for Smithfield. References from Emerald Isle, Pollocksville and Boiling Springs were all positive, according to town staff.
