Smithfield Awards Contract For Buffalo Creek Greenway Repairs

SMITHFIELD, N.C. — Repairs to two bridges and a boardwalk along the Buffalo Creek Greenway will move forward after the Smithfield Town Council approved a construction contract during its June 2 meeting.

Council members authorized an agreement with Jose Manuel Munoz Solis, the low bidder. The combined contract totals $44,500.

The project will be funded largely through a $30,000 grant awarded to the Town of Smithfield by the Johnston County Parks and Open Space Fund in December 2025. The grant was awarded for repairs and renovations to two greenway bridges and the boardwalk located at the Buffalo Road underpass along the Buffalo Creek Greenway.

The remaining $14,500 local match will come from the Parks and Recreation Department budget.

Parks and Recreation Director Gary Johnson told council members the town’s share can be covered using unused funds remaining in the department’s Capital Outlay budget. Johnson said the funds are available due to cost savings realized from other projects completed during the current fiscal year.

The Parks and Recreation Department solicited quotes for both projects and received proposals from three contractors.
