Smithfield’s newest police officer was sworn into office this week.

Virginia “Bre” Harter received her oath on Tuesday from Smithfield Mayor Andy Moore.

“Officer Harter was an excellent candidate at BLET (Basic Law Enforcement Training) at Johnston Community College,” according to Police Chief Michael Scott.  “She is now the department’s only full-time female officer. That is extremely important to us. It allows us to better connect with female victims of crime as well as create better diversity within the agency.

The department has two part-time female officers.

Harter will be assigned to the patrol team to fill an existing vacancy.
