Smithfield Homeowner Suffers Burns In House Fire

SMITHFIELD, N.C. — A Smithfield homeowner was hospitalized with burns after a fire heavily damaged his residence Wednesday night.
Firefighters from Smithfield, Selma and Four Oaks responded to a reported house fire at 707 S. First Street and arrived to find flames coming from the home.

The 65-year-old homeowner had made it outside the residence before emergency crews arrived. He was transported to UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill for treatment of burn injuries.
Firefighters worked to bring the blaze under control, but the home sustained extensive damage.

Johnston County Fire Marshal Travis Johnson said the cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Johnston County Fire Marshal’s Office and the Smithfield Police Department.
