UPDATE: Smithfield Man Charged After Head-On Collision Critically Injures One Person

SMITHFIELD — A Smithfield man has been charged with causing a head-on collision Monday afternoon that left one person critically injured.

Smithfield Police said the crash happened at 4:39 P.M. on Buffalo Road just north of Hospital Road. Brandon Capps, 45, was driving a 2004 Chevrolet SUV southbound when police said he crossed the centerline and collided with a 2017 Toyota passenger car traveling northbound, driven by 57-year-old Jose Calzadilla, also of Smithfield.

Elizabeth Martinez, 37, of Smithfield, a passenger in the Toyota, was pinned in the wreckage and suffered critical injuries. Firefighters from Smithfield and Selma worked for more than 30 minutes to extricate her.

All occupants were wearing seat belts.

Capps was charged with failure to reduce speed and failure to maintain lane control. Police said additional charges have not been ruled out as the investigation continues.
