Smithfield Police Seek Grant To Fund Traffic Safety Officer
SMITHFIELD – The Smithfield Town Council unanimously approved a request from Police Chief Pete Hedrick on August 5 to apply for a Governor’s Highway Safety Program (GHSP) grant. If awarded, the grant would fund a dedicated Traffic Safety Officer for three years.
In the first year, the grant would cover 100% of equipment costs, including a patrol car, and 85% of the officer’s salary. Funding would decrease to 70% in year two and 50% in year three. The town’s total contribution over three years would be about $110,860, while the grant would provide approximately $388,770 in value. After the grant period, all equipment would become town property.
The officer would focus on traffic enforcement, including speeders and illegal parking, and could assist with emergency calls as needed.
The town expects to learn later this year whether the position will be funded.

Great move! More traffic enforcement is needed in JoCo!
Maybe if the town didnt promise over a 100k to help the millionaires who own the howell theater they could afford it themselves instead of panhandling like our newest residents by the library
