The Town of Smithfield experienced multiple untreated wastewater discharges due to excessive flooding on November 11th and 12th. The town said six individual sites were discovered releasing untreated wastewater into the storm sewer or the adjacent ditches.
Approximately 150,000 gallons was discharged into tributaries leading directly to the Neuse River, officials announced Tuesday.
The NC Division of Water Resources was notified of all the incidents.
