This week, the Smithfield Parks and Recreation Department and Smithfield Recreation Advisory Board honored “Sonny” Paul Howard with the Bryant-Marett Meritorious Service Award.

The award was presented during a banquet held on Monday.  The award named for the first two recipients, Jackie Bryant and Earl Marett, was established in 2009 and recognizes individuals that have continuously and unselfishly contributed to the Smithfield Parks and Recreation Department and the Smithfield Community.

“Sonny” has coached and officiated baseball, softball, basketball and football in the Smithfield area for more than 40 years.

Parks and Recreation Director Gary Johnson said, “Sonny is the quintessential official.  He knows the rules, the game he’s officiating, he’s always there and most importantly he does not take things personally. He continues to be asset to the Parks and Recreation Department.”  Contributed photos
