SMITHFIELD – A South Smithfield intersection is now an all-way stop. At the request of the Smithfield Police Department, the Smithfield Town Council voted unanimously last week to add stop signs on Hood Street at the intersection with Chestnut Drive.
Police Captain James Grady said the department has received speeding complaints in the area, which is near South Smithfield Elementary School.
Due to the number of pedestrians and children in the area, Captain Grady believes the all-way stop intersection will lower the speed limit in that area and nearby streets.
The Town is also installing additional speed limit signs near the elementary school.
Only makes sense that the intersections that are a lot closer to the school (Hood/Walnut & Hood/Crescent) also get 4 way stop signs.
