CLAYTON – Southside Christian School in Clayton celebrated the opening of their new campus with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, April 17. The celebration included dignitaries, business owners, families, students, staff, and board members.
Southside Christian School began in 2006 with the simple mission of creating a place where children could grow in their knowledge of Christ, learn in an environment that encouraged academic excellence, and be inspired to reach their highest potential for the glory of God. The school’s vision evolved over the years with the unwavering dedication of many families, business owners, and community leaders. After spending over a decade in rented church facilities, Southside Christian School constructed its own facilities.
The 29.75 acre campus includes a 37,000 square foot educational building with a gymnasium, elementary playground, and soccer field. Plans include the development of a baseball field, a field house, and a second educational building.
Mrs. Jenene Davis, Head of School, opened the celebration by giving thanks for all who helped bring this vision to fruition. “I am overwhelmed with the generosity of God’s people,” commented Mrs. Davis. “We couldn’t be more grateful for the multitude of people who invested their resources, talent, and time to ensure our building would serve our students well. As we walk through the halls, we see the blessings of God in every detail.”
Dr. James Harmeling, lifelong pastor and visionary, opened the ceremony with a prayer of gratitude. Dr. Harmeling watched the school’s journey as they moved from modulars – to renting local churches – and now to their own facilities. He continues to serve as chapel speaker when he is home from his involvement in world missions.

Southside Christian School Board Treasurer, Mrs. Kristy Wiesel, served as the master of ceremonies. “My family is personally blessed to be part of this ministry. We have three sons who have been impacted by this school. Our oldest son graduated last year, and he was well prepared for success in college. Our two younger sons are having a great experience and are being challenged by the rigorous academic offerings and encouraged in their walk with Christ.”
Mr. Don Banker, CEO of Banker Aviation, served as the keynote speaker for the event. Mr. Banker shared how his passion for Christian education led him to provide a foundational gift to Southside Christian School at the beginning of the Fulfill the Vision capital campaign. Attendees were encouraged to continue serving the Lord with gladness and challenged to pass the baton of faith on to the next generation.
Final remarks were made by the Southside Christian School Chairman of the Board, Mr. Bill Adams. In addition to expressing deep gratitude for those who were instrumental in the construction of the new campus, Mr. Adams invited guests to take note of the remaining naming rights opportunities posted in the building by adding, “Before we jump into Phase Two with a new capital campaign, we need to complete the projects that are part of Phase One. We are grateful that over fifty percent of our naming rights opportunities have been claimed already. Finishing out those additional areas will provide the necessary funds for some projects that will enhance our program and provide an immediate impact on program enrichment.”
The closing prayer was offered by Head of School Elect Mr. Zach Zebro. As Mrs. Davis nears retirement, the baton of leadership is being passed to Mr. Zebro this summer for the next phase of Southside Christian School’s growth.
Congratulations! May the Lord co tinue jo to bless you as you continue to grow and minister to these students! 😇🙏
Always good when new competition starts from the failed public school system. Even better when they teach Christ.
….. and while the inept boe is working about running based on party and trying to kick off other members, and trying to hide money from commissioners, and covering up for others…. More and more alternatives keep opening up.. they’ll never learn.
