Stepson Charged In Homicide Of Johnston County Man

BENSON – The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office has made an arrest in the homicide of a 70 year-old Benson man. The body of James Dwight Peacock was found by deputies inside his home, at 1621 NC Highway 27 West, on June 15. Officers had been dispatched to the address for a welfare check.

Authorities said Mr. Peacock was found deceased inside his residence. He died from a single gunshot wound.

Following an investigation into his murder, Wesley Alexander Jones, age 25, of NC Highway 87 S, Fayetteville was arrested June 22 with the assistance of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office and Wake County Sheriff’s Office. Jones, identified as the former stepson of the victim, was charged with murder. He is being held in the Johnston County Jail without bond.

Sheriff’s Captain Jeff Caldwell said the investigation remains ongoing. No additional information has been released, including a possible motive.
