Store Clerk Charged With Embezzlement

SMITHFIELD – A convenience store clerk has been charged with embezzling money. Amy Kaye Cooper, 31, of Kenly was arrested August 16th by Smithfield Police following a criminal investigation.

On July 1, 2021, management at The Spot, at 836 W. Market Street, reported Cooper had allegedly been removing money from the cash register and keeping it. She was also accused of allowing some individuals to take merchandise from the store without paying. Authorities allege Cooper stole $100 on one occasion and $102 during a second incident.

Cooper was charged with embezzlement and confined in the Johnston County Jail on a $20,000 bond. She was also held on an additional $1,000 bond for two failure to appear warrants for speeding and driving on a revoked license.
