Suspect Arrested After Smithfield Clerk Injured During Robbery

SMITHFIELD, N.C. — A Clayton man wanted for allegedly injuring a store clerk during a robbery in Smithfield has been arrested.
Devante Jerrod Norman was taken into custody Tuesday night on outstanding warrants obtained by the Smithfield Police Department. He was confined in the Johnston County Detention Center.
Norman had been sought since a robbery reported around 8:50 a.m. Tuesday, June 23 at a BP convenience store located at 817 S. Third Street.
According to police, Norman entered the store and brought several items to the checkout counter. After the clerk advised him of the total cost, he allegedly became upset and began yelling at the employee.

Investigators said Norman then left the store with the merchandise without paying.

The clerk sustained injuries from the fall and was transported to Johnston Medical Center in Smithfield for treatment.
Following an investigation, Smithfield Police obtained warrants charging Norman with felony common law robbery and misdemeanor assault inflicting serious injury.
Norman was held without bond Tuesday night pending his first court appearance.
