A student was caught with a loaded handgun on the campus of Harnett Central Middle School today (Wednesday).
Around 8:35am, a school resource officer with the Harnett County Sheriff’s Office, assigned to the school, was notified by administrators a juvenile student had a gun on campus. The deputy immediately took possession of the weapon and secured it.
In a press release this afternoon, authorities said the incident involved only one student. A juvenile petition was obtained for the juvenile and the student was taken into custody on a charge of having a weapon on educational property.
According to Lt. Aaron Meredith the handgun belonged to an adult that lived in the same residence as the juvenile offender. A warrant was issued for the adult for failing to secure a firearm. The adult was not the parent of the juvenile. The adult’s name was not immediately released.
Authorities credit another student for tipping off administrators about the juvenile with the gun.
