Surveillance Video Leads To Charges Against Walmart Employee

JOHNSTON COUNTY, N.C. — A former Walmart employee has been charged after she allegedly stole merchandise from the store where she worked.

Amaya Chanel Stephens, 23, of Clayton was arrested June 20 and charged with two felony counts of larceny by employee.

According to the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office, Walmart loss prevention personnel reported Stephens was captured on surveillance video taking merchandise from the store on two separate occasions earlier this month.

The incidents reportedly occurred June 3 and June 6 at the Walmart located at 5141 Veterans Parkway near I-40.

Officers allege Stephens placed merchandise into a bag while working and then left the store at the end of her shift without paying for the items.

The stolen merchandise was valued at approximately $58.26 and included chicken, chicken tenders, a hamburger and a sports drink.

Although the value of the merchandise was relatively low, North Carolina law classifies larceny by employee as a felony offense when an employee steals property entrusted to them by their employer.

Stephens was given a $500 secured bond following her arrest.
