SELMA – The State Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of a single vehicle accident Wednesday morning that seriously injured the female driver. She was the only occupant in the vehicle.
Around 9:00am, a white Lincoln SUV was traveling northbound on NC Highway 96 North near the intersection of Thanksgiving Fire Department Road. The vehicle drifted off the roadway on the right, traveled through a ditch, struck a driveway culvert and went airborne into a large tree. The SUV landed and traveled another several hundred feet impacting a second tree. The SUV was sent spinning around towards the direction of a house but stopped short of striking the residence.
The residents in the home rushed outside and found the seriously injured driver in the back seat of the SUV. She was transported by Johnston County EMS to WakeMed.
Authorities said the SUV traveled more than 550 feet after leaving the paved roadway until the vehicle came to a stop.
Must have been hard to see over that steering wheel.
