Tax Office Telephone Number Used In Scam

The Johnston County Tax Office is warning citizens of reports one of their telephone numbers has been used recently as part of a telephone spoofing scam.

Scammers can alter caller ID systems to make it appear that the call is coming from a telephone number in the Johnston County Tax Office. In this case the number was 919-989-5149.  The callers are attempting to collect credit card debt.  The Tax Office does not request payment be made over the phone.

According to a press release issued Friday, officials said they are treating the matter very seriously.

Anyone who may have been a victim of the telephone scam is asked to contact their local authorities.
