A Johnston County teenager was arrested for hit and run and driving while impaired following an accident Tuesday morning near Smithfield.
Smithfield Police responded to an accident around 2:00 AM on Buffalo Road near Eason Road. Officers said 18 year-old Wilbert Surles of Mackenzie Drive, Princeton was traveling northbound in a 2005 Chevy when he crossed the centerline, ran off roadway striking a total of 5 mailboxes then struck a tree. Police said Surles vehicle traveled 416 feet after impacting the first mailbox until striking the tree.
According to an accident report, Surles registered 0.13 on the Breathalyzer. Surles was charged with DWI, driving after consuming under age 21, and hit and run property damage. Surles was not injured in the collision, however his car sustained $700 in damage.
