A Wilson’s Mills teenager was gunned down by her boyfriend early Saturday. Now that man is charged with second-degree murder.
Wilson’s Mills Police have charged 42 year-old Derrick Williams of Wilson’s Mills with second degree murder in what Police Chief David Hess described as the “accidental death” of 18 year old Moesha Lockamy.
Police responded to Williams’ address at 92 Mitchner Drive around 2:41am Saturday. When officers arrived they found Lockamy bleeding from what appeared to be a single gunshot wound to the chest. Officers and EMS attempted to resuscitate Lockamy but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators believe that Lockamy and Williams, who were dating, where playing with the firearm when it discharged. The exact circumstances of events leading up to the discharge of the weapon are still being investigated, Chief Hess said.
According to arrest records, Williams is a convicted felon and has a history of drug and weapons charges.
“I have met with the victim’s family and prayed with them for their tragic loss,” Chief Hess said in a press release. “This young girl will never have the opportunity to live a full life as a result of today’s tragic events. I want to thank the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office, District Attorney’s Office and the State Bureau of Investigations for assisting with this investigation.
“To some extent the family will be able to have closure because law enforcement did a professional job to the fullest of their abilities and have charged the person responsible for her death,” Hess added.
Williams was confined in the Johnston County Jail under a $100,000 bond. He made his first court appearance on the second-degree murder charge on Monday.
