3 Killed In Fiery Wrong-Way Crash On I-40

UPDATE THURSDAY 3:15PM: The pickup truck driver has been identified as Nicholas Glenn McGee, 24, of Fuquay Varina. Impairment is suspected.

The names of the two people who died in the SUV have not been released pending positive identified by the NC Medical Examiner.

BENSON – Three people were killed in a fiery collision involving a wrong-way vehicle on Interstate 40 in Johnston County.

The collision was reported around 9:50pm Wednesday in the westbound lanes of I-40 near the 315 mile marker.

A Toyota Tacoma pickup truck was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes when it collided head-on with a Dodge SUV.

The pickup overturned across the center median ejecting the male driver. The driver died at the scene.

The Dodge SUV burst into flames immediately after the collision. Two people in the SUV were killed.

Westbound I-40 was closed until early Thursday morning before reopening.

The State Highway Patrol is investigating.
