Three People Injured In Parking Lot Accident

Three people were sent to the hospital with minor injuries following an accident in the parking lot of Carolina Premium Outlets on Outlet Center Drive.

Smithfield Police and first responders responded to the accident at 3:44pm Tuesday.

According to an accident report, a 2004 Toyota driven by Destiny Mariah Gainey of Smithfield was traveling south through the parking lot and stopped for a stop sign in the parking lot.  She began to move forward. As she did, Gainey told police she saw another vehicle coming towards her causing her to swerve to the left to avoid being hit. When she swerved, her car went up on a grassy area off the curb.

The driver of the second vehicle, Kathy Gee Rusch of Clayton, who was operating a 2012 Nissan SUV, told police she was traveling forward and did not see Gainey’s vehicle stop for the stop sign.

There was no contact between the vehicles.

Gainey and two passengers in her vehicle were transported by ambulance to Johnston Medical Center in Smithfield.

No charges were filed.  Police estimated damage to the Toyota at $6,000. There was no damage to the Nissan.
