UPDATE: Tow Truck Driver Cited After Crash Injures Woman, Three Children On US 70
WILSON’S MILLS, N.C. — A commercial tow truck driver has been cited after a crash on U.S. 70 West in Wilson’s Mills sent a woman and three children to the hospital.
The collision occurred around 11:26 a.m. Saturday near Swift Creek Road as traffic slowed because of an unrelated crash farther west on U.S. 70.
According to Wilson’s Mills Police Chief A.Z. Williams, officers were initially advised that two children were trapped in the rear seat of the passenger vehicle. However, by the time officers arrived, all four occupants had been safely removed with the assistance of bystanders and the tow truck driver.
Police said the passenger vehicle, driven by an adult female, was occupied by three juvenile passengers. All four were transported to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment.
The preliminary investigation found the passenger vehicle and a large commercial tow truck collided before both vehicles traveled approximately 200 feet and came to rest in the median.
Chief Williams said the driver of the passenger car told police she was slowing to a stop because traffic had backed up from another crash scene ahead. She said she saw the tow truck approaching from behind and attempted to change lanes to avoid a collision before her vehicle was struck from the rear.
The tow truck driver reportedly told officers he observed traffic slowing and moved from the right lane into the left lane, where the passenger vehicle merged in front of him.
Chief Williams said officers determined the tow truck driver failed to reduce speed to avoid the collision. He was issued a citation for failure to reduce speed.
Initial information provided Saturday indicated five people had been injured. Police have since clarified that four people—the female driver and three children—were injured, and all sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
The crash temporarily disrupted westbound traffic on U.S. 70 while emergency crews treated the injured and cleared the scene.
Wilson’s Mills Police, Wilson’s Mills Fire Department and Johnston County EMS responded.

🤔 WTH !!! You are assuming and you know what assume means… make an a** of u and me? Not all tow truck drivers are careless and reckless. They are driving a vehicle that weighs a h*ll of a lot more than a car. It’s harder to steer than a car and stopping abruptly is not an easy task. It was said that the red car pulled in front of the tow truck. Don’t go making assumptions when you don’t know what you’re talking about.
MASTERZ……all tow truck drivers ARE NOT A**HOLES!!! Most of these men are good people! There are bad people everywhere! But to call all of them bad is terrible for you to say that! This one happened to do something wrong. Think before you speak man! You should be ashamed!
This roadway with a 70 mph speed limit is already becoming the deadliest road in Johnston County (besides 95).
70 mph so the DOT can keep traffic moving.
The area at Swift Creek is a 60mph zone. Keep going 70mph if you have ticket money. You are thinking about the bypass, which is further down.
That’s incorrect, it is 70 mph from the prison west. And there are far more accidents on I-95 around Benson and Dunn than there. I imagine the first accident that caused this pileup was again caused by distraction and not speed.
