SMITHFIELD – Following the recommendation of Planning Staff, the Smithfield Town Council rejected a request to rezone a residential property for commercial use.
Syed Rivzi with New Vision Trust Custodian requested approval to rezone a 0.23 acre lot and single family residence at 606 South Third Street from Residential to Office & Institutional zoning.
In the rezoning application, Mr. Rizvi said the proposed use would be a professional office.
Town staff expressed concerns about parking and commercial use in a family residential neighborhood.
Planning Director Stephens Wensman said it was not clear as to the specific intended use of the property. He suggested a Conditional Zoning (CJ) would be better than Office-Institutional (O/I) Zoning to identify the specific use of the property.
Mr. Rizvi was not present for the September 17 public hearing.
In a motion by Councilman David Barbour, the board voted unanimously to reject the rezoning application.
