The Town of Smithfield will conduct a salary study to determine if any changes are needed to the pay and classification scale for employees.
$20,000 was in the current fiscal year budget for the study. A bid was awarded below budget to the Triangle J Council of Governments of which the Town is a dues paying member at a price of $18,000. The only other bid received was for $19,025. Two other companies did not respond to requests to submit a bid.
“Salary studies, or pay and classification studies, are conducted for a number of reasons. One is to ensure that both employers and employees better understand the relationships between positions, work and pay. They are also designed to make sure that an employer remains competitive with similar employers in their regional market – allowing the employer to recruit and retain top-tier talent,” stated Tim Kerigan, Human Resource Director for the Town of Smithfield. “As a government employer, we want to make our citizens aware of these values and concerns as well. With our last study being conducted over 10 years ago, it was important that we make sure that our position descriptions and pay structures are still relevant.”
The Town has approximately 140 full-time and 80 part-time positions.
