A driver managed to make it out of his burning vehicle after it crashed and caught fire. The accident happened around 3:30am Saturday on Interstate 40 about 3 miles east of Interstate 95 near Benson.
A pickup truck was traveling on I-40 when the driver lost control, hit the abutment to a bridge and came to rest behind the bridge support and caught fire.
The driver was taken to Wake Medical Center for treatment. Fire crews arrived and extinguished the burning truck.
The NC Department of Transportation responded to inspect the bridge for any structural damage. The NC Highway Patrol is investigating. Photos by John Payne
