A Johnston County Sheriff’s Office checkpoint late-Thursday night led to the arrest of a both occupants in a vehicle.
Johnston County deputies had set up the checkpoint in the 4900 block of Raleigh Road outside of Benson, according to Sheriff’s Captain A.C. Strickland.
Authorities said Michael Steven Stokes, 30, of Lassiter Farm Lane, Clayton pulled up and an officer detected an odor of alcohol. During a search of the car white powder, believed to be cocaine, was seized. Officials said both occupants in the car denied the drugs belonged to them.
Stokes and a passenger, Charles Anthony Putz, 24, of Scarlet Oak Run, Clayton were charged with felony possession of cocaine. Stokes was also charged with driving while impaired after reportedly registering 0.15 on the Breathalyzer, nearly double the legal limit of 0.08.
