UPDATE: Two Teenagers Killed In High Speed Pursuit Identified

KENLY – A late-night high-speed chase through Wayne and Johnston counties ended in tragedy when a vehicle fleeing State Highway Patrol troopers crashed on a rural road near Kenly, killing two passengers.

According to the State Highway Patrol, the incident began at 11:26 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 16, when a trooper spotted a blue Ford Mustang traveling over 120 mph on U.S. 70 in Wayne County. When the trooper attempted a traffic stop, the driver refused to pull over, prompting a pursuit that continued into Johnston County before traveling back into Wayne County.

The chase ended on Pinkney Road near Kenly, where the driver lost control of the Mustang and struck a tree. Two back seat passengers were ejected and died at the scene. They have been identified as Joshua Jerome Carter Jr., age 18, of Dudley, and Braylen Newson, age 16, of Pikeville.

The 17-year-old driver and 16-year-old front-seat passenger, who were both wearing seat belts, were taken into custody without incident and transported to UNC Wayne Hospital in Goldsboro with non-life-threatening injuries, authorities said.

Troopers reported finding alcohol, marijuana, and two firearms inside the wrecked vehicle. The driver is believed to have been impaired, according to the Highway Patrol.

Officials are currently withholding the names of the surviving 17 year-old driver and 16 year-old front-seat passenger because of their ages and pending criminal charges.

The State Highway Patrol, along with its Collision Reconstruction Unit, is continuing to investigate the deadly crash.

  1. My grandmother lived on 581 near Pinkney and even 60 years ago there was a lot of racing on that road. My sympathies to the families of these foolish children

    • Teens with firearms, drugs, and alcohol at 11:26pm the night before Monday’s school classes. Blame the lax moral code of our society. Blame the breakdown of nuclear families. Blame illegal activities, etcetera…
Don’t blame law enforcement, whose primary job is to ENFORCE the LAW.

Regardless- there are two families grieving the tragic loss of their children who made stupid decisions. And two other teens who will have to live with that for the remainder of their lives.

    • Yea, just let them run someone else off the road and kill them instead. Maybe instead of wanting law enforcers to stop doing their jobs these parents should be more aware of what their kids are doing, and take a more active role in theirs lives.

    • So its the troopers fault? All they had to do is stop and take their punishment. We are living in a time where children are being taught that its ok to avoid accountability and find every reason to blame someone for another’s actions. Accountability starts at home. Kids will be kids and kids will drink and raise h*ll on the road especially if they have the right car to do that with but when you get caught, take it like a man, learn a lesson and grow from that.

  2. these comments about “Stop chasing them” are exactly the reason why Joco is going downhill and fast. Because of this mentality and voting, I’m guessing all from libs!

    • Im a red as red could be. But, they could have called off the pursuit. And followed from a distance, then pounce when the opportunity presented itself.

  3. Whew. Blaming everyone but the real culprit. The devil comes to steal, kill, and destroy. Be of sober mind because he roams around like a roaring lion seeking those to destroy. He needs a little foothold and he’s there. Do Not Encourage your kids to be friends with The whole world.
