UPDATE 8:30pm April 15 – Authorities have confirmed the victim’s killed were a 37 year-old mother and her 11 year-old daughter. They are from Louisiana. Their names have not been released. It was originally reported the two victims who died were juveniles.
BENSON – Five people were injured, two fatally, in a traffic accident in southern Johnston County. The collision was reportedly around 3:30pm Friday on Highway 242 South at Dragstrip Road.
Initial reports indicate a Jeep failed to yield for a stop sign on Dragstrip Road and was struck by a dump truck traveling on Highway 242.
There were five people in the Jeep. Two passengers died at the scene. Two other passengers were seriously injured. The driver was injured but not seriously.
The driver of the dump truck was not injured. He reportedly lived a few miles from the scene and was on his way home when the crash occurred.
The State Highway Patrol is investigating the accident. The names of those involved has not been released.
The roadway was closed for more than three hours following the deadly crash.
