The NC Highway Patrol is investigating a deadly wreck this morning in southern Johnston County. The crash happened around 9:20am on Interstate 40 near the Highway 242 Exit close to the 325 mile marker.
Troopers said a 2003 Ford SUV was traveling eastbound when it ran off I-40 to the right, struck a ditch and a tree before overturning. The vehicle came to rest on its roof with the driver pinned inside.
As a result of the collision, the driver and front seat passenger were killed. A rear seat occupant was taken to Wake Medical Center with minor injuries. Troopers have not released the names of the victims killed pending notification of their next of kin.
Numerous emergency vehicles responded to the accident. Traffic was backed up for several miles in the eastbound lanes. Westbound traffic was not impacted. Photo courtesy ABC 11
