MOUNT OLIVE – Several University of Mount Olive students will compete in the 12th annual North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities (NCICU) Ethics Bowl. The event will be February 9-10 at the NC Legislative Building in Raleigh.
The goal of the Bowl is to provide an important opportunity for students to interact with business and community leaders in a way that exemplifies the values of students attending independent colleges and universities and expose students to the realities of ethical issues in today’s society.
The competition will feature students from 18 independent colleges and universities in North Carolina. The Ethics Bowl will feature four rounds of competition with two teams going head-to-head in each round. Volunteers from the areas of business, community, and government will judge the matches.
The theme of this year’s event is “Ethics in Artificial Intelligence and Cybersecurity.”
After the first day of competition, students attend a plated dinner to engage with corporate sponsors and meet other students. In preparation, the UMO team participated in an etiquette dinner hosted by the Tillman School of Business. Southern Bank and Trust Company Chairman and CEO Drew Covert and wife, Vickey, attended the dinner representing Southern Bank as a sponsor of UMO’s team. The UMO Ethics Bowl group also toured the production plant of corporate sponsor Mt. Olive Pickle.
This year’s UMO team includes: Paul Battaglia, a finance major from Richmond, Virginia; Kathryn Broom, a cybersecurity and applied computer science major from Houston, Texas; Kimberly Cuellar, a business management major from Wilmington, North Carolina; Nicolas Logue, an accounting major from Centennial, Colorado; Callie Mullins, an accounting major from Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; and Earl W. Worley, an Accounting major from Princeton, North Carolina.
