CLAYTON – The State Highway Patrol says charges are pending following a deadly crash involving four family members on Winston Road near Clayton. An 8 year-old child badly injured in the crash later died in the hospital from her injuries.
Just before 5:00pm Sunday, a Honda CRV was traveling on Winston Road when the vehicle ran off the roadway to the right, struck a ditch and overturned several times coming to rest off the roadway. At least one of the occupants had to be extricated by Clayton Fire personnel.
Troopers said the driver and the front seat passenger, both adults, sustained serious but non-life threatening injuries. Two children were riding in the back seat. An 8 year-old girl sustained serious head trauma and later died at WakeMed. A 3 year-old girl sustained minor injuries.
The Highway Patrol says speed, alcohol and inattention are suspected as contributing factors. Troopers are consulting with the Johnston County District Attorney’s Office to determine the charges.
The names of those involved have not been released due to the ongoing investigation.
