Update: Police Identify Suspect, Employee Stabbed Inside Hospital

Smithfield Police have identified the suspect who reportedly stabbed a hospital employee in the emergency room at Johnston Health in Smithfield this evening (Saturday).

Police have charged 25 year-old Connor Phillip Sullivan with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury. Sullivan is accused of using a knife to stab 52 year-old Eric Hammond, an employee at Johnston Health, around 6:13pm.

After the stabbing, Sullivan fled from the hospital on foot. Multiple officers from the Smithfield Police Department and Johnston County Sheriff’s Office responded. They took Sullivan into custody about two blocks away from the hospital.

Police said Hammond sustained “life threatening injuries” during the assault. No additional details on his condition were released in a 10:45pm Press Release.

Sullivan was booked into the Johnston County Jail a short time ago and is being held under a $60,000 bond.
